The Unemployment Index. The Dow Jones Indexes. The SavvyFlack Parking Space Availability Index.
We have lots of fancy indexes to tell us just how much this economy sucks monkey balls, but I have one of my own that I believe is a far better indicator of suck. It’s the Parking Space Availability Index. It’s simple and works like this: the more parking spots available in my office building or apartment complex or shopping mall, the worse the economy.
Today when I pulled in, there was a spot available right next to the entrance. Now I know we’re screwed.

OK, just hit me... another indicator of economic health... the number of sale shoes available in size 7. The more sale shoes available, the worse the economy.

Yup. Screwed. Let's drink tonight!
Wow - this is so true! Not that I go to the mall, or anywhere really, since I am one of the unemployed. But it makes sense to me!!
And boy, am I saving money on gas (yes, you can thank me for those lower gas prices due to declining demand!)

Yes, you nailed it! It would have taken a team of boffins, expending millions of taxpayers' dollars, to verify what you already know: that parking space availability is inversely proportional to economic health.
Now all that is required is for the financial whizzkids to abandon their trading on Wall Street and jump on the 'PSA Index' They'll be charting moving averages, Fibonacci retracements and all that good stuff, making fortunes in the process. I think you've stumbled upon the next 'big thing'...
In the short term though, we remain well and truly screwed.
I LOVE that you've coined this new index!! And it's crazy how scary right you are...we see it from the flip side at www.parkingspots.com whereby the number of spots going up is increasing as people are moving/losing jobs, relocating and just looking to make extra cash off their empty space.
